PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS What to Do After Mass? If you were able to join us for school Mass yesterday, you may have noticed a small change in the way our students now conclude Mass. After the final recessional, students will remain in the pews, kneel, and offer a short prayer of thanksgiving before being dismissed. This is a simple addition, but one that carries great meaning. At St. Paul’s, we want our students to continue growing in their understanding that the church is a sacred space and that time spent there should be treated with reverence and care. We also want our children to see prayer not as something reserved only for certain moments, but as a natural and important part of their daily lives. Those final 30 to 60 seconds after Mass provide a beautiful opportunity for just that. In the quiet of the church, students can thank God for the blessings in their lives, ask Him to watch over their families, lift up a special intention, or pray a Hail Mary or an Our Father. While brief, these moments of silence and reflection can have a powerful impact in helping our students build habits of prayer and deepen their relationship with God. It is also important to note that when parents or family members choose to join us for school Mass, our preference is that students remain with their classroom for the entirety of the Mass. School Masses are intended to be a time for classes to worship together as a school community, and remaining with their classmates helps preserve the reverence, structure, and shared experience of the liturgy. Our hope is that these practices help our young people leave Mass not hurried or distracted, but grounded in gratitude and reminded of the presence of God in their lives. It is often in these small, intentional moments that faith begins to take deeper root. Thank you for continuing to support us in helping our students grow not only academically, but also spiritually. Teachers look at many factors when creating homeroom lists including academic ability, behavior, and student friendships to create a balanced homeroom where children will be successful. Requests for a particular teacher or separation from a particular student should be few. It is important to give clear, detailed reasons for this isolated request. Requests granted for a particular homeroom will be limited to a maximum of 3 boys and 3 girls. The principal, guidance counselor, assistant principal and current classroom teachers will meet to decide which requests will be granted based on the most pressing student needs (academic and behavioral). Classroom Request forms must be turned into the school office by March 27, 2026, to be considered. Forms are available in the school office. Emails, personal conversations, and phone messages will NOT serve as a formal request and will not be considered. Late forms will not be accepted. *************** Future Club Scholarship St. Paul the Apostle Future Club is offering a scholarship for a graduating high school senior who attended St. Paul the Apostle School, and who is planning to attend a college or university. You must include a typewritten essay entitled “What My Catholic Education Has Meant to Me” (maximum 1,000 words). The Selection Committee will review all applications and essays. The scholarship is not renewable. All applications must be received at SPS by Tuesday, March 31. No late applications will be accepted. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Daylight Saving Time always feels like the universe decided to prank adults with their responsibilities. One minute you had a routine, a system, a sense of order. The next minute, the clock jumps ahead, and suddenly everyone is expected to act like losing an hour of sleep is no big deal. The kids are confused, the dogs want breakfast at the “old time,” and somehow you are both running late and exhausted at the exact same time. It is especially painful when your whole day depends on a schedule. You wake up feeling like you are lacking sleep, even when you technically did not. Breakfast feels rushed, your brain is buffering, and by mid-morning you are wondering why lunch seems so far away. Then evening comes, and even though the clock says it is time to be productive, your body is convinced it is much later and ready to shut the whole operation down. The strangest part is how everyone pretends we will “adjust in a few days,” as if that is comforting. A few days? That is a long time to be living in survival mode because someone decided the sun and I needed a new arrangement. Daylight Saving Time is basically jet lag without the vacation. We ordered these reminders because of the concerns we shared last week regarding drop-off and pick-up procedure violations. While some of these rules may feel minor in the moment, they exist for one reason: the safety of our students, staff, and families , and we need your help. Please take a moment to review the pick-up and drop-off expectations below, and be sure to share them with anyone who transports your child (grandparents, childcare providers, neighbors, older siblings, etc.). We all live in a fast-paced world, but drop-off and pick-up is one place we cannot afford to rush. Thank you for taking your time, staying alert, and doing your part to keep everyone safe. Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Enrollment for 2026-2027 Past Due Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now past due! We have about 15 families who have NOT completed this process, and are in jeopardy of losing their spot. You must do 2 things to complete the registration process: 1) Log into the link below using your Powerschool user name and password, then click on the “UPDATE” button next to each child’s name and go through each screen (your information should already be populated). IF YOU HAVE TO ENTER EVERYTHING MANUALLY, STOP! You are creating a duplicate record and we will have to deny it. Please make sure everything is up to date (primary contacts, emergency contacts, etc. as this information dumps into PowerSchool). It is imperative that we have contact information for all primary contacts (parents)/guardians in case of emergency. Log into your Odyssey account and click on “View balance”, then on “view marketplace”. Click on the search button at the top (magnifying glass icon on the right hand side) and type in "Registration". Then click on the SCCS Registration Fee Logo and add to your cart. You should receive an email from Odyssey that says “thank you for your purchase”. This process will have to be completed for EACH child. Odyssey will then transfer the money to SCCS - no need to let the SPS or SCCS office know that you paid via Odyssey. Each child has to use their own funds. If a child doesn’t have enough money in their account, you will have to pay out of pocket. If you have already paid through Blackbaud, but would rather use ESA funds, go ahead and complete the ESA payment, and then money you already paid via Blackbaud will be applied to any balance you have due (lunch or aftercare, for example), or refunded. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS February, the longest short month of the year. Somehow it’s the only month with fewer days and more attitude. One minute we’re cruising through the school year, and the next we’re asking, “Wait… how is it only February 11th!?” (And also, “How is it already February 11th!?”) The weather can’t decide what it wants to be, our routines are strong but our patience is being tested, and the calendar is packed even though the month is not. And yet, February still brings so many good things: students settling in, teachers pushing forward, and families doing the daily hero work of getting everyone up, fed, and out the door. As we make our way through this longest short month together, let’s remember to dress in layers, stay hydrated, and be extra kind to classmates, to staff, and to ourselves. Hang in there everyone. Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Pick-Up and Drop-Off instructions We have noticed a concerning trend during both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up: some K-8 students are being dropped off or picked up on Rusholme Street. This creates a significant backup, disrupts our normal traffic flow, and has nearly led to several accidents. Please follow the appropriate parking lot drop-off/pick-up procedures, which can be found here: Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures . If someone else brings your children to school or picks them up after school, please review these procedures with them as well. Our goal is to prevent any accidents that could occur due to traffic congestion and gridlock. Each child has to use their own funds. If a child doesn’t have enough money in their account, you will have to pay out of pocket. The other Catholic elementary buildings use this curriculum and it is utilized at AHS as well. 5th–8th grade students will be participating in REAL Changes, a healthy relationship and puberty education program using the evidence-based REAL Essentials curriculum. This instruction aligns with Iowa Department of Education SEL/PE/Health standards and supports students in building self-worth, making healthy decisions, and developing positive relationships. This is not something that we would describe as being similar to, "the talk." It is more focusing on being healthy mentally and physically. Presentations will take place in February during the school day and will be led by trained nurses and/or social workers. Doors will open at 5:30 after mass and trivia will start at 6:15 p.m. Questions will be geared for every age group from Bluey, to Taylor Swift, to Elvis and everything in between. Show up by yourself, with friends or with your family and join a table. Cost is $5 per person at the door ($50 for reserved table). Feel free to bring your own food and drinks or buy a walking taco and drink for $5. We will also have pop, water and desserts for sale.
