PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Yesterday was Veterans Day. As we pause as a school community to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform, Veterans Day reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy were secured through the dedication and selflessness of those who served, past and present. At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we are especially grateful for the veterans within our own community - parents, grandparents, and alumni, who have answered the call to serve. Their example teaches our students the true meaning of duty, faith, and gratitude. As we celebrate this day, may we continue to pray for all who serve and for peace in our world. Let us teach our children to carry forward the values our veterans represent: courage, integrity, and love of neighbor. Thank you, veterans, for your service and sacrifice. We honor you today and always. -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Christmas Music Programs Please mark your calendars for our upcoming Christmas music programs! This remarkable achievement reflects the generosity and compassion that define our community. Thank you to all of our students, families, and staff who contributed to making a difference. Together, we continue to live out our faith through service to others. Way to go, SCCS! -Mr. Connors ***************** Pop Tabs Did you know our school and church collects pop tabs? After we have a big supply we take them to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. The Ronald McDonald House offers housing, meals, and support for families whose children receive treatment at the children's hospital. This offsets their fundraising to supply the housing, meals and support free of charge. Please send these to the school office in care of Erin Darland. ***************** Pathfinders 5th-8th graders are invited to join Pathfinders, a program designed to help students discern their gifts and learn about vocations. Our next meeting will be Monday November 17th from 3:00-4:15. The theme will be ’What is a Priest?’ We will reflect on what it is to be a priest with special guest Fr. Bruce DeRammelaere, journal about asking God to guide our own path and learn about our Saint of the Month, Saint John Vianney. There will be some great discussion! I will meet students in the school courtyard to walk them over after school. I am happy to take students over to aftercare when the session is done, but you must indicate that in the comments with your RSVP before the class. Please RSVP through the link by Sunday November 16th for this month's session— November Pathfinders . If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Sarah Kahler at kahler.sj@gmail.com. We look forward to learning more about our faith together at Pathfinders! ***************** Isn’t He Wonderful? Children’s Nativity Play Come and celebrate the joy of Christmas with us! PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As the seasons change, we’re reminded of God’s beauty and the many blessings that surround us each day. The vibrant colors of fall mirror the energy and joy within our school, classrooms filled with curiosity, laughter echoing through the halls, and students living out their faith in both big and small ways. This fall has been full of meaningful moments at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. From our 5th graders leading the Saints Parade at Mass, to service projects that help others in our community, to lessons that encourage students to see God’s hand in their learning, our students are truly growing in faith, knowledge, and character. We are grateful for the partnership of our parents, the dedication of our teachers and staff, and the spirit of our parish community that makes St. Paul’s such a special place. Together, we are helping our students become the individuals God calls them to be. There’s no better place to learn, serve, and grow than right here, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. -Mr. Connors ******************** WHAT’S NEW Iowa Alliance for School Choice in Education (ACE) At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we’re committed to providing every child with an exceptional, faith-filled education, and we’re excited to share a fantastic opportunity with you through Iowa ACE. Ultimately, true accountability lies with the parents: if a school does not meet the needs of its students, families have the freedom to choose another institution, and ESA funds follow the student. October 29, 2025 Principal’s Ponderings Halloween Safety As Halloween approaches, excitement is in the air! Before our Panthers head out for a fun night of trick-or-treating this Friday, here are a few simple reminders to help keep everyone safe while enjoying the evening: Stay Visible: Wear light-colored costumes or add reflective tape and carry flashlights or glow sticks. Walk Safely: Stick to sidewalks and cross streets at corners using crosswalks. Remind children to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Know Your Route: Younger children should always be with an adult, and older students should travel in groups on a planned route. Check Costumes: Make sure masks don’t block vision and costumes fit properly to avoid tripping. Candy Check: Remind children not to eat any treats until an adult has looked them over. Drivers, Be Alert: Slow down in neighborhoods and watch carefully for excited trick-or-treaters who may dart into the street. At St. Paul's safety is always a top priority whether in our classrooms, on our playgrounds, or out in the community. Let’s make sure this Halloween is filled with fun, laughter, and safe memories for everyone! Your story is a powerful way to show how this program is opening new doors for students and helping families provide the best possible educational experience for their children. We’d love for you to share how your child’s opportunities have grown since moving to a private school with the support of the ESA. For example, you could also share how your child’s learning, confidence, or engagement has changed, and how the ESA has allowed your family to access these opportunities. To make it easy to share your story, please use this Google Form: Submit Your ESA Story . Your responses will help demonstrate the real benefits of the ESA program for families like yours. Please now that your name will be included in this response. Thank you for taking the time to tell your story. We can’t wait to hear it! ****************************************************************************************** ESA and School Choice Objection: “Private schools aren’t accountable like public schools are.” Response: At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we are committed to maintaining high standards of accountability. As an accredited institution, we adhere to state educational requirements, including standardized testing and accreditation processes. Additionally, many of our students participate in national assessments to monitor academic growth. Ultimately, true accountability lies with the parents: if a school does not meet the needs of its students, families have the freedom to choose another institution, and ESA funds follow the student. At St. Paul the Apostle, we are deeply committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and families. Dad and an adult son are working full-time to support the family, but they could use help with several items. We are collecting new or very gently used fall/winter clothing, household and personal care items as well as gift cards. Students who miss more than 10% of school days are considered chronically absent, and those reaching 15%, if absences affect learning, will be invited to an Engagement Meeting to develop an Absenteeism Prevention Plan. Absences that reach 20% may be referred to the county attorney. The state also expanded exempt absences, including funerals, weddings, and military service, so these do not count toward attendance thresholds. Schools now use standardized attendance codes (like unexcused/excused, in-school suspension, or family leave) to record absences accurately. At St. Paul’s, we will be implementing these new codes to better track attendance and to support students. Starting in the 2nd quarter, we will also move to a clock-in/clock-out system, which will give a more precise picture of attendance throughout the day. Families can expect clearer communication and more proactive collaboration to help students stay on track. A helpful reminder: If your child has a medical or dental appointment, please provide the school with a doctor’s note so the absence can be properly marked as exempt. If your family will be out of town, let us know why and for how long, this information helps us determine whether the absence qualifies as exempt or non-exempt. Thank you for helping us keep attendance records accurate and ensure every student receives the support they need to succeed. *********************************************************************************************

October 22, 2025 PRINCIPAL'S PONDERINGS This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Vera French Gala at the Figge Art Museum, a beautiful celebration of compassion and community centered on the importance of mental health. At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we know that emotional and mental well-being are just as important as academics and faith formation. We are grateful to have a guidance counselor and school-based therapy available to help students who need extra support. Sometimes having a safe place to talk and a trusted adult to listen makes all the difference. We also want to remind our families that mental health matters for parents and guardians, too. Taking care of yourself (body, mind, and spirit) helps you care for your children even more fully. Together, let’s continue to build a community of hope, support, and faith where everyone knows, “You are never alone.” -Mr. Connors ********************************************************************************************* WHAT’S NEW Safety is Always a Priority Last Friday, I had the opportunity, along with the other Catholic school principals in our area, to meet with the Davenport Police Department to discuss safety concerns and the ongoing needs of our school buildings. This month is dedicated to reflecting on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her unwavering faith, and her example of love and service. Mary’s humility and devotion remind us of the importance of kindness, prayer, and compassion in our daily lives. Throughout October, we encourage our students and families to take a few moments each day to honor Mary, whether through prayer, reflection, or small acts of goodness toward others. In our classrooms, we will be sharing stories about Mary, discussing her virtues, and finding ways to live out her example in our school community. May this month inspire all of us to grow in faith, hope, and love, just as Mary did. Let us continue to support one another in our journey of learning, faith, and service. ********************************************************************************************* Ladies Night Bingo Ladies Bingo Night Thursday November 13th 6-9 p.m., Doors open at 5 p.m. LNB Online Registration Link LNB Flyer ********************************************************************************************* AI Use on Student Devices We want to keep you updated that AI tools have been removed from student devices here at school. While these programs can sometimes be helpful, we’ve found they are not appropriate for everyday student use during the school day. We encourage you to help us by monitoring technology use at home as well. Many devices and apps now have built-in AI features, and students can be curious about exploring them. Please take a moment to talk with your child about responsible technology use and set limits that work best for your family. Together, we can help guide our students toward safe, balanced, and thoughtful use of technology. Thank you for partnering with us in this important effort! ********************************************************************************************* Student Hunger Drive The St. Paul can food drive goes through October.
