PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS The spirit of the holidays is in full force at SPS! From our all-school Advent prayer services in the gym on Mondays, gathering as one community to light the Advent candles and prepare our hearts for Jesus, to hearing students joyfully practicing for their Christmas concerts as I walk the halls, our school is absolutely buzzing with excitement and faith. On a personal note, I’m especially looking forward to my own son’s first Christmas performance in our 3-year-old preschool. Moments like these remind me how blessed we are to learn, laugh, pray, and celebrate together. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As we head into the holiday season, we’ve noticed an increase in student absences this past couple of weeks due to illness (including myself!). This time of year brings joy and celebration, but also more germs making their way around. To help keep our students healthy and learning, here are a few simple reminders: Stay home when sick. If your child isn’t feeling well, fever, vomiting, or other symptoms, please keep them home until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours. If you take your child to the doctor, please provide the school with a note. Hydrate and fuel up. Plenty of water, balanced meals, and good sleep go a long way in boosting the immune system, especially with busy schedules and colder weather. Handwashing matters. Encourage regular handwashing before eating and after coughing or sneezing. It’s still one of the most effective ways to stop the spread. Teach healthy habits . Covering coughs, using tissues, and avoiding sharing drinks or snacks helps protect everyone. Prioritize rest. Late nights and holiday excitement can add up, children (and adults!) need consistent sleep to stay well. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our community healthy during this special season. Every day I am reminded how blessed we are to learn, pray, and grow together at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. The energy, joy, and dedication that fill these hallways are a reflection of the incredible people who make up our community. Thank you for the countless ways you support our school, from volunteering at events, to partnering with teachers, to offering encouragement, generosity, and prayer. As we pause as a school community to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform, Veterans Day reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy were secured through the dedication and selflessness of those who served, past and present. October 29, 2025 Principal’s Ponderings Halloween Safety As Halloween approaches, excitement is in the air! Before our Panthers head out for a fun night of trick-or-treating this Friday, here are a few simple reminders to help keep everyone safe while enjoying the evening: Stay Visible: Wear light-colored costumes or add reflective tape and carry flashlights or glow sticks. Walk Safely: Stick to sidewalks and cross streets at corners using crosswalks. Remind children to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Know Your Route: Younger children should always be with an adult, and older students should travel in groups on a planned route. Check Costumes: Make sure masks don’t block vision and costumes fit properly to avoid tripping. Candy Check: Remind children not to eat any treats until an adult has looked them over. Drivers, Be Alert: Slow down in neighborhoods and watch carefully for excited trick-or-treaters who may dart into the street. October 22, 2025 PRINCIPAL'S PONDERINGS This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Vera French Gala at the Figge Art Museum, a beautiful celebration of compassion and community centered on the importance of mental health. At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we know that emotional and mental well-being are just as important as academics and faith formation. We are grateful to have a guidance counselor and school-based therapy available to help students who need extra support. Sometimes having a safe place to talk and a trusted adult to listen makes all the difference. We also want to remind our families that mental health matters for parents and guardians, too. Out-of-Uniform Guidelines (Handbook, pg. 27): Leggings or bike shorts may only be worn under dresses or skirts Skirts, dresses, and shorts must be 2 inches above the knee or longer . No spaghetti straps; sleeveless tops must have shoulder seams 1½–2 inches wide . No bare midriffs; logos and slogans must be appropriate. All other dress code rules remain in effect. Thank you for helping our students show school spirit while following dress expectations! Earring Guidelines While we agree that earrings that hang below the earlobes can be very cute; especially seasonal designs like a cat in a pumpkin, they are not permitted under our current uniform policy. To ensure consistency with our dress code, students should wear earrings that stay close to the earlobe, as defined in our policy as “stud earrings”. Beginning in October St Paul's will be starting a new program called Pathfinders. Pathfinders is designed to help students discern their gifts and learn about vocations. Monthly sessions will include activities, a Saint of the month, speakers and great discussion. Pathfinders will be held on the third Monday of each month after school in McEleney Hall. Our first meeting will be Monday October 20th from 3:15-4:15. The theme will be ’Sharing your Gifts’. We will do a gifts inventory, learn about our Saint of the Month, Carlo Acutis and hear from Deacon Ryan Burchett. It will be a great time! We ask that if your child will be coming you sign up using the signup genius by October 19th. I am happy to take students over to aftercare when the session is done as long as you indicate that in your RSVP before the class. October 8, 2025 Principal’s Ponderings Have you ever noticed how a small act of kindness can completely change the mood of a day? A simple smile, a “thank you,” or asking someone how they are can ripple through our school community in ways we might not even realize. At our school, we see these moments every day; when a student helps a classmate, when a teacher celebrates effort over perfection, or when families support one another in small but meaningful ways. Research shows that the more a student attends school, the stronger their learning and long-term outcomes will be. Students who miss 10% or more of school days are considered chronically absent. Families of students who reach this threshold will receive a letter from the school notifying them of this status. Plans can be made based on this status and we are required to file truancy once a threshold is reached, and no improvement has been made. That said, we know that absences happen. When your child is sick, they should absolutely stay home to recover. If your child is absent for a medical reason and you provide a doctor’s note, those absences will not count toward chronic absenteeism. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more. Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations. For the past few years each grade level classroom and specials subject have chosen a country or cultural event/item to learn more about with their students. Students work in small groups, create posters, research individuals, bring treats, sing songs and share what they have learned with one another.
