If you have a child currently enrolled, but do not know your PowerSchool login information, please watch your email this afternoon for instructions on how to create your account. Soup suppers will be held every Wednesday evening in Denning Hall from February 25 through March 25 at 6:00 PM (following the 5:30 PM Mass). On March 25, our school will be sponsoring the soup supper. If you are providing soup, please: Drop off soups by 5:00–5:15 PM Label your crock pot with your name Take your crock pot home at the end of the evening If possible, include a list of ingredients and any allergens (this is especially helpful for those with allergies or dietary restrictions) Thank you for your generosity and support in making our soup suppers successful! Our school families will host this week’s soup supper with the help of our parish community. LINK TO SIGN UP STILL CURRENT Real Choices at SPS We are excited to announce that we are bringing Real Choices through the Women's Choice center to SPS! The other Catholic elementary buildings use this curriculum and it is utilized at AHS as well. 5th–8th grade students will be participating in REAL Changes, a healthy relationship and puberty education program using the evidence-based REAL Essentials curriculum. This instruction aligns with Iowa Department of Education SEL/PE/Health standards and supports students in building self-worth, making healthy decisions, and developing positive relationships. This is not something that we would describe as being similar to, "the talk." It is more focusing on being healthy mentally and physically. Presentations will take place in February during the school day and will be led by trained nurses and/or social workers. Parents/guardians are invited to a curriculum preview and Q&A on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School in the Media Center. Questions? Y & O CSW 2026 *********** Science Fair Judges Needed Hello St. Paul Families, I am in search of volunteers with a strong science background or who are involved in a science or engineering career familiar with the steps and process of the scientific method. Tuesday, February 3rd from 8:00 to 10:30 is the 7th grade science fair. Students have worked for two and half months researching, setting up, and experimenting on a topic of their choice. I am seeking adult volunteers that would be willing to judge several seventh graders' overall experiment, presentation, report, and display. This would all be judged using a provided rubric. One request I have is that if you are the parent, grandparent, or directly connected to any seventh graders you are kindly asked not to volunteer to keep judging as fair as possible. Thank you so much for considering! ************ Catholic Schools Week Service Project St. Ambrose University Global Brigade Collection During Catholic Schools Week, the students in grades 4-8 will be collecting school supplies for students in rural Panama who have little to no school supplies. St. Ambrose University students will travel to rural Panama in March 2026 with the "Global Brigade" organization to deliver these items and work with the people there to help in the education of their children. A flyer is attached. Supplies needed: notebooks, small backpacks, pencils, erasers, folders, stickers, construction paper, party favors. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As we begin a new year, we’re reminded that fresh starts are one of God’s greatest gifts. The turning of the calendar doesn’t just mark time, it invites us to reflect, reset, and step forward with renewed purpose. A new year brings new opportunities to grow in faith, to strengthen friendships, to work through challenges with perseverance, and to become a little better than we were yesterday. It’s also a chance to set meaningful goals, whether that’s improving study habits, being more responsible, showing more kindness, or simply giving our personal best each day. At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we believe every child is created with purpose, and each day is another chance to discover and develop the gifts God has placed within them. As we enter 2026 together, my hope is that our students and families feel encouraged and supported, knowing that growth doesn’t require perfection, just effort, humility, and a willingness to try again. Happy New Year from all of us at SPS! -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Medication Change in 2026-2027 School Year Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, there will be a change to our medication procedures. St. Paul the Apostle will no longer provide ibuprofen (Advil) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to students. This adjustment aligns with the recommendation of the Scott County Health Department. If a student comes to the office with a headache, we will recommend they drink water and return to class. If they return and symptoms persist, we will contact home. During the second semester of this school year, we will continue to provide Advil and Tylenol as needed, but we will be more selective and encourage water first. Thank you for your understanding and partnership in keeping our students safe. ********** Spruce Up the School We need all hands-on deck to make our school sparkle for Catholic Schools week!! There is a Men’s Night link for Friday night for anyone who wants to come in and help with the “High” stuff (cleaning light fixtures and fixing items that require a ladder), as well as a link for Saturday morning for deep cleaning classrooms and hallways. Any amount of time will be greatly appreciated and this will count as volunteer hours for your Home and School obligation. Students, especially Junior High are welcome to help too, but they must stay with a parent at all times! PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS There’s something really special about piling onto the couch with my wife and kids and turning on Christmas movies. Watching The Grinch or Elf with them feels like coming home to a part of my own childhood. These are the movies I loved when I was young, and now I get to see them through my kids’ eyes (mostly my three year old), the giggles, the wide-eyed wonder, the way they quote the silly lines for days afterward. Sharing these simple moments, wrapped in blankets with a bowl of popcorn, I’ve realized this is a gift I never knew I’d cherish so deeply. It’s not just about the movie, it’s about the warmth, the togetherness, and the quiet joy of making memories I know we’ll hold onto for a long time. It was originally due on Monday, but they are hoping to present the gift certificates to the faculty/staff on Monday so getting them on Friday will give them time to total them up and put all of the contributing family names on the individual certificates. Please disregard the due date on the printed sheet. *************** Out of Uniform - 12-18-2025 - Red and Green Christmas Colors To celebrate the Christmas season, next Thursday, December 18th, students may be out of uniform if they wear red and green Christmas colors. Out of uniform guidelines still apply. Out of Uniform Guidelines ● Leggings and/or bike shorts may only be worn under a dress or skirt. Dresses and skirts must be 2 inches above the knee or longer. ● Boys and girls shorts must be 2 inches above the knee or longer. ● Spaghetti straps are not allowed. If a sleeveless shirt is worn, the shoulder seams must be 1½ to 2 inches wide. ● No bare midriffs. ● Logos and slogans must be appropriate. *************** Important Panther Perks Program Updates for 2026 We would like to inform you of several upcoming changes to the Panther Perks Program. Beginning January 1, 2026, the following updates will take effect: Monthly Physical Gift Card Orders Physical gift cards will now be processed once per month. All orders for physical cards—whether submitted via the green order sheet or through RaiseRight—must be turned in by 8:00 AM on the first Tuesday of each month. One-Week Processing Time Physical gift card orders will be sent home with your student one week after the order deadline, on the second Tuesday of each month. We appreciate your patience, as this one-week turnaround ensures our volunteers have the time needed to accurately process all orders. Ordering Outside the Monthly Schedule If you need physical gift cards outside of the scheduled monthly order week, you may place an order through the parish office at any time. Please note that parish staff may need 1–2 days to process these requests. Any orders for physical gift cards sent to school or placed online after the first Tuesday of the month will not be filled until the following month. E-Gift Cards and Reloads Available Anytime E-gift cards and reloads remain available 24/7 through the RaiseRight app. These are delivered to you electronically immediately after purchase and do not require volunteer processing—making them a convenient option for on-demand access! PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS The spirit of the holidays is in full force at SPS! From our all-school Advent prayer services in the gym on Mondays, gathering as one community to light the Advent candles and prepare our hearts for Jesus, to hearing students joyfully practicing for their Christmas concerts as I walk the halls, our school is absolutely buzzing with excitement and faith. On a personal note, I’m especially looking forward to my own son’s first Christmas performance in our 3-year-old preschool. Moments like these remind me how blessed we are to learn, laugh, pray, and celebrate together. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As we head into the holiday season, we’ve noticed an increase in student absences this past couple of weeks due to illness (including myself!). This time of year brings joy and celebration, but also more germs making their way around. To help keep our students healthy and learning, here are a few simple reminders: Stay home when sick. If your child isn’t feeling well, fever, vomiting, or other symptoms, please keep them home until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours. If you take your child to the doctor, please provide the school with a note. Hydrate and fuel up. Plenty of water, balanced meals, and good sleep go a long way in boosting the immune system, especially with busy schedules and colder weather. Handwashing matters. Encourage regular handwashing before eating and after coughing or sneezing. It’s still one of the most effective ways to stop the spread. Teach healthy habits . Covering coughs, using tissues, and avoiding sharing drinks or snacks helps protect everyone. Prioritize rest. Late nights and holiday excitement can add up, children (and adults!) need consistent sleep to stay well. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our community healthy during this special season. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As we move into Thanksgiving week, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our students, families, and staff. Every day I am reminded how blessed we are to learn, pray, and grow together at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. The energy, joy, and dedication that fill these hallways are a reflection of the incredible people who make up our community. Thank you for the countless ways you support our school, from volunteering at events, to partnering with teachers, to offering encouragement, generosity, and prayer. This year she was hoping to have us help with a Family focused basket for families in need to include hygiene/family items/food items for Christmas. There is a sign up genius of items to help fill the 15 baskets. Items can be brought to the main office or Mrs. Harvey's room. Laundry Basket Project Cafe on Vine - We are collecting warm items for Cafe on Vine for Christmas Eve. We are looking for warm hats, gloves, socks, scarfs, coats, boots and thermal under clothes. Items can be dropped off in the 8th grade hallway. The student council will be hosting a Christmas Eve lunch at Cafe on Vine and provide desserts and snack bags. Next Tuesday, we will be sending home a “Panther Perks for the Holidays” flyer so you can donate to a Christmas gift certificate for your children’s teachers and staff. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Yesterday was Veterans Day. As we pause as a school community to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform, Veterans Day reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy were secured through the dedication and selflessness of those who served, past and present. At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we are especially grateful for the veterans within our own community - parents, grandparents, and alumni, who have answered the call to serve. Their example teaches our students the true meaning of duty, faith, and gratitude. As we celebrate this day, may we continue to pray for all who serve and for peace in our world. Let us teach our children to carry forward the values our veterans represent: courage, integrity, and love of neighbor. Thank you, veterans, for your service and sacrifice. After we have a big supply we take them to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. The Ronald McDonald House offers housing, meals, and support for families whose children receive treatment at the children's hospital. October 29, 2025 Principal’s Ponderings Halloween Safety As Halloween approaches, excitement is in the air! Before our Panthers head out for a fun night of trick-or-treating this Friday, here are a few simple reminders to help keep everyone safe while enjoying the evening: Stay Visible: Wear light-colored costumes or add reflective tape and carry flashlights or glow sticks. Walk Safely: Stick to sidewalks and cross streets at corners using crosswalks. Remind children to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Know Your Route: Younger children should always be with an adult, and older students should travel in groups on a planned route. Check Costumes: Make sure masks don’t block vision and costumes fit properly to avoid tripping. Candy Check: Remind children not to eat any treats until an adult has looked them over. Drivers, Be Alert: Slow down in neighborhoods and watch carefully for excited trick-or-treaters who may dart into the street. At St. Paul's safety is always a top priority whether in our classrooms, on our playgrounds, or out in the community. These conversations are invaluable as we continue to reflect on and strengthen our safety practices. At St. Paul the Apostle, we are deeply committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and families. We will continue to review and improve upon the systems and procedures that help protect our children each and every day while they are here with us. ********************************************************************************************* Donations Needed A group of St. Paul Volunteers have partnered with World Relief and formed a Good Neighbor Team to mentor a local refugee family. The Semiyrango family consists of mom and dad and 7 kids aging from 2-20. They are originally from the Congo and after a lengthy and legal process arrived in the US in April of 2024. Dad and an adult son are working full-time to support the family, but they could use help with several items. We are collecting new or very gently used fall/winter clothing, household and personal care items as well as gift cards. Please drop donations off in the bins located along the windows in the gathering space and gift cards (in envelope marked Good Neighbor Team) to the Parish Office by Oct. 31. Students who miss more than 10% of school days are considered chronically absent, and those reaching 15%, if absences affect learning, will be invited to an Engagement Meeting to develop an Absenteeism Prevention Plan. Absences that reach 20% may be referred to the county attorney. The state also expanded exempt absences, including funerals, weddings, and military service, so these do not count toward attendance thresholds. Schools now use standardized attendance codes (like unexcused/excused, in-school suspension, or family leave) to record absences accurately. At St. Paul’s, we will be implementing these new codes to better track attendance and to support students. Starting in the 2nd quarter, we will also move to a clock-in/clock-out system, which will give a more precise picture of attendance throughout the day. Families can expect clearer communication and more proactive collaboration to help students stay on track. A helpful reminder: If your child has a medical or dental appointment, please provide the school with a doctor’s note so the absence can be properly marked as exempt. If your family will be out of town, let us know why and for how long, this information helps us determine whether the absence qualifies as exempt or non-exempt.
