PRINCIPAL'S PONDERINGS

This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Vera French Gala at the Figge Art Museum, a beautiful celebration of compassion and community centered on the importance of mental health.

At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we know that emotional and mental well-being are just as important as academics and faith formation. We are grateful to have a guidance counselor and school-based therapy available to help students who need extra support. Sometimes having a safe place to talk and a trusted adult to listen makes all the difference.

We also want to remind our families that mental health matters for parents and guardians, too. Taking care of yourself (body, mind, and spirit) helps you care for your children even more fully.

Together, let’s continue to build a community of hope, support, and faith where everyone knows, “You are never alone.”

-Mr. Connors

WHAT’S NEW

Safety is Always a Priority

Last Friday, I had the opportunity, along with the other Catholic school principals in our area, to meet with the Davenport Police Department to discuss safety concerns and the ongoing needs of our school buildings. These conversations are invaluable as we continue to reflect on and strengthen our safety practices.

At St. Paul the Apostle, we are deeply committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and families. We will continue to review and improve upon the systems and procedures that help protect our children each and every day while they are here with us.

Donations Needed

A group of St. Paul Volunteers have partnered with World Relief and formed a Good Neighbor Team to mentor a local refugee family. The Semiyrango family consists of mom and dad and 7 kids aging from 2-20. They are originally from the Congo and after a lengthy and legal process arrived in the US in April of 2024. Dad and an adult son are working full-time to support the family, but they could use help with several items.

We are collecting new or very gently used fall/winter clothing, household and personal care items as well as gift cards. Please drop donations off in the bins located along the windows in the gathering space and gift cards (in envelope marked Good Neighbor Team) to the Parish Office by Oct. 31. If buying new, please attach a receipt so that items can be exchanged if needed. Contact Sandy Steinke at 563.940.1481 with any questions. Thank you for your generosity!

Attendance Updates SPS

This year, Iowa has updated how schools track student attendance. Students who miss more than 10% of school days are considered chronically absent, and those reaching 15%, if absences affect learning, will be invited to an Engagement Meeting to develop an Absenteeism Prevention Plan. Absences that reach 20% may be referred to the county attorney.

The state also expanded exempt absences, including funerals, weddings, and military service, so these do not count toward attendance thresholds. Schools now use standardized attendance codes (like unexcused/excused, in-school suspension, or family leave) to record absences accurately.

At St. Paul’s, we will be implementing these new codes to better track attendance and to support students. Starting in the 2nd quarter, we will also move to a clock-in/clock-out system, which will give a more precise picture of attendance throughout the day. Families can expect clearer communication and more proactive collaboration to help students stay on track.

A helpful reminder:
If your child has a medical or dental appointment, please provide the school with a doctor’s note so the absence can be properly marked as exempt.

If your family will be out of town, let us know why and for how long, this information helps us determine whether the absence qualifies as exempt or non-exempt. Thank you for helping us keep attendance records accurate and ensure every student receives the support they need to succeed.

SPS Communications

At SPS, communication is a priority. While it may sometimes feel overwhelming, we use a variety of channels to reach you as parents. Our goal is to ensure that you feel well-equipped and informed when it comes to your child’s education.

*********************************************************************************************

ESA and School Choice

Objection: “Private schools aren’t accountable like public schools are.”

Response: At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we are committed to maintaining high standards of accountability. As an accredited institution, we adhere to state educational requirements, including standardized testing and accreditation processes. Additionally, many of our students participate in national assessments to monitor academic growth. Ultimately, true accountability lies with the parents: if a school does not meet the needs of its students, families have the freedom to choose another institution, and ESA funds follow the student.

October is the Month of Mary

As we step into October, we embrace a special tradition in our Catholic faith, the Month of Mary. This month is dedicated to reflecting on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her unwavering faith, and her example of love and service. Mary’s humility and devotion remind us of the importance of kindness, prayer, and compassion in our daily lives.

Throughout October, we encourage our students and families to take a few moments each day to honor Mary, whether through prayer, reflection, or small acts of goodness toward others. In our classrooms, we will be sharing stories about Mary, discussing her virtues, and finding ways to live out her example in our school community.

May this month inspire all of us to grow in faith, hope, and love, just as Mary did. Let us continue to support one another in our journey of learning, faith, and service.

AI Use on Student Devices

We want to keep you updated that AI tools have been removed from student devices here at school. While these programs can sometimes be helpful, we’ve found they are not appropriate for everyday student use during the school day.

We encourage you to help us by monitoring technology use at home as well. Many devices and apps now have built-in AI features, and students can be curious about exploring them. Please take a moment to talk with your child about responsible technology use and set limits that work best for your family.

Together, we can help guide our students toward safe, balanced, and thoughtful use of technology. Thank you for partnering with us in this important effort!

Student Hunger Drive

The St. Paul can food drive goes through October.  SPS is competing against the other area Catholic schools to see whom “can” bring in the most cans. Please send in cans to your child's homeroom class. Each day we will collect and record which class has brought in the most.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

By Ethan Connors March 11, 2026
PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Daylight Saving Time always feels like the universe decided to prank adults with their responsibilities. One minute you had a routine, a system, a sense of order. The next minute, the clock jumps ahead, and suddenly everyone is expected to act like losing an hour of sleep is no big deal. The kids are confused, the dogs want breakfast at the “old time,” and somehow you are both running late and exhausted at the exact same time. It is especially painful when your whole day depends on a schedule. You wake up feeling like you are lacking sleep, even when you technically did not. Breakfast feels rushed, your brain is buffering, and by mid-morning you are wondering why lunch seems so far away. Then evening comes, and even though the clock says it is time to be productive, your body is convinced it is much later and ready to shut the whole operation down. The strangest part is how everyone pretends we will “adjust in a few days,” as if that is comforting. A few days? That is a long time to be living in survival mode because someone decided the sun and I needed a new arrangement. Daylight Saving Time is basically jet lag without the vacation. As we are all going through this, let’s remember to be patient, take a breath, and know that we will get through this together! -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Spring Break Next week is Spring Break. We hope you enjoy your family time. School will resume on Monday, March 23. *************** School Calendar 2026-2027 The school calendar for the 2026-2027 school year is attached to the Weekly Panther email and will be added to the school website. *************** ISASPs ISASP tests (formerly called Iowa tests of Basic Skills) will be administered to all students in grades 3 - 8 the week of April 20. If your child has any appointments scheduled for this week, we ask that you please consider rescheduling so that they can complete testing with their class (versus having to find time to make up testing and miss valuable class time). Please also make an effort to arrive at school on time during ISASP week. The first bell rings at 7:45 and the tardy bell rings at 7:55. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Spring break is March 14th - March 22nd. It can also serve as a great chance to rest, reset, and come back feeling your best. Try to keep a consistent sleep routine, going to bed and waking up around the same time each day helps your body stay energized (even if bedtime shifts a little later). Aim for simple, healthy eating habits: drink plenty of water, include fruits and veggies each day, and balance fun treats with meals that fuel you (protein, whole grains, and healthy snacks go a long way). And don’t forget reading! A few minutes a day makes a big difference. Bring a book in the car, read before bed, or set a family reading time. By Ethan Connors February 19, 2026
PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS You may have noticed the new signs we placed along Rusholme Street this morning. We ordered these reminders because of the concerns we shared last week regarding drop-off and pick-up procedure violations. While some of these rules may feel minor in the moment, they exist for one reason: the safety of our students, staff, and families , and we need your help. Please take a moment to review the pick-up and drop-off expectations below, and be sure to share them with anyone who transports your child (grandparents, childcare providers, neighbors, older siblings, etc.). We all live in a fast-paced world, but drop-off and pick-up is one place we cannot afford to rush. Thank you for taking your time, staying alert, and doing your part to keep everyone safe. Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Enrollment for 2026-2027 Past Due Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now past due! We have about 15 families who have NOT completed this process, and are in jeopardy of losing their spot. You must do 2 things to complete the registration process: 1) Log into the link below using your Powerschool user name and password, then click on the “UPDATE” button next to each child’s name and go through each screen (your information should already be populated). IF YOU HAVE TO ENTER EVERYTHING MANUALLY, STOP! You are creating a duplicate record and we will have to deny it. Please make sure everything is up to date (primary contacts, emergency contacts, etc. as this information dumps into PowerSchool). It is imperative that we have contact information for all primary contacts (parents)/guardians in case of emergency. Click on this Link to re-enroll: https://portal.sccsiowa.org/ If you have forgotten your username or password, please email katee.bates@st-paul.pvt.k12.ia.us . Please do NOT create a NEW account by hitting the “get started” button. Current families must “LOGIN” (in the upper right hand corner) to update their accounts. If you have a new student that you would like to add to your current family profile, select add new student once you have reviewed your current student’s information. Make sure to submit at the end. 2) Pay the Registration fee If you have a child currently in Kindergarten - 8th grade, you may use your ESA marketplace funds to pay the $150 enrollment fee for 2026-27. Log into your Odyssey account and click on “View balance”, then on “view marketplace”. Click on the search button at the top (magnifying glass icon on the right hand side) and type in "Registration". Then click on the SCCS Registration Fee Logo and add to your cart. You should receive an email from Odyssey that says “thank you for your purchase”. This process will have to be completed for EACH child. Odyssey will then transfer the money to SCCS - no need to let the SPS or SCCS office know that you paid via Odyssey. Each child has to use their own funds. If a child doesn’t have enough money in their account, you will have to pay out of pocket. If you have already paid through Blackbaud, but would rather use ESA funds, go ahead and complete the ESA payment, and then money you already paid via Blackbaud will be applied to any balance you have due (lunch or aftercare, for example), or refunded. If you do not have marketplace funds, please login to your Blackbaud account and once you have selected a student, select “purchase optional items” at the top center of the page and select the 2026-27 enrollment fee. ********** Mass and Divine Mercy Chaplet This year, we're encouraging junior high students to attend *Friday morning 6:30 AM Mass before school AND/OR *Friday Divine Mercy chaplet at 3:00 after school (should last about 20 minutes). By Ethan Connors February 12, 2026
PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS February, the longest short month of the year. Somehow it’s the only month with fewer days and more attitude. One minute we’re cruising through the school year, and the next we’re asking, “Wait… how is it only February 11th!?” (And also, “How is it already February 11th!?”) The weather can’t decide what it wants to be, our routines are strong but our patience is being tested, and the calendar is packed even though the month is not. And yet, February still brings so many good things: students settling in, teachers pushing forward, and families doing the daily hero work of getting everyone up, fed, and out the door. As we make our way through this longest short month together, let’s remember to dress in layers, stay hydrated, and be extra kind to classmates, to staff, and to ourselves. Hang in there everyone. March is out there somewhere, probably hiding behind the next snowflake! Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Pick-Up and Drop-Off instructions We have noticed a concerning trend during both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up: some K-8 students are being dropped off or picked up on Rusholme Street. This creates a significant backup, disrupts our normal traffic flow, and has nearly led to several accidents. Please follow the appropriate parking lot drop-off/pick-up procedures, which can be found here: Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures . If someone else brings your children to school or picks them up after school, please review these procedures with them as well. Our goal is to prevent any accidents that could occur due to traffic congestion and gridlock. We have ordered additional signage for these areas, but until it arrives, we appreciate your diligence and cooperation in keeping everyone safe. ************ Early Dismissal This Friday/No School Monday Just a reminder that we have an early dismissal this Friday, Feb. 13 at 12:55 and NO SCHOOL on Monday, Feb. 16. *********** Enrollment for 2026-2027 DUE THIS FRIDAY Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now open, and must be completed by February 13 to guarantee your spot for next year . PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Holy sickness! We have seen a rise in students being sick in all schools across the Scott County. Here are some helpful tips for parents. When your child is sick, please help us keep everyone healthy by keeping them home if they have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, a persistent cough, or symptoms that are worsening or prevent them from fully participating in school. If symptoms are severe, don’t improve, or you suspect a contagious illness such as flu, strep, or pink eye, please contact your doctor. If your child is seen by a doctor, please provide the school with a note so we can document the absence and support any needed restrictions. Your child may return to school once they have been fever-free and symptom-free (vomiting/diarrhea) for 24 hours and are feeling well enough to complete a full school day. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community safe and healthy. Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Enrollment for 2026-2027 Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now open, and must be completed by February 13 to guarantee your spot for next year. When you start, please make sure you are registering for the 2026-2027 school year. If you already have an account but have forgotten your username or password, please email katee.bates@st-paul.pvt.k12.ia.us . Link to re-enroll: https://portal.sccsiowa.org/ You may use your ESA marketplace funds to pay the $150 enrollment fee for 2026-27. The enrollment fee must be paid and the online enrollment updated by Feb. 13 to be considered fully registered and save your spot for the 2026-27 school year. ********** Tuition Rates for 2026-27 For the 2026–27 school year, our K–8 tuition rates will be $6,930 for parish-supported families and $8,930 for non–parish-supported families. For reference, the 2025–26 Education Savings Account (ESA) amount is $7,988, and the estimated ESA amount for 2026–27 is $8,148; however, the state has not approved any increase in funding for any schools at this time. ********** Andy Craig Leaving SCCS at End of the School Year Andy Craig, President of Scott County Catholic Schools, has informed the Board and staff of his intent to step down at the conclusion of the 2025–26 school year. Mr. Craig has served Assumption Catholic Schools and SCCS for 20 years, providing faithful leadership and steadfast commitment to the mission of Catholic education. We extend our sincere congratulations to Mr. Craig and offer our heartfelt gratitude for his dedication and the lasting contributions he has made on behalf of our Catholic schools. *********** Future Club Scholarship St. Paul the Apostle Future Club is offering a scholarship for a graduating high school senior who attended St. Paul the Apostle School, and who is planning to attend a college or university. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As we begin a new year, we’re reminded that fresh starts are one of God’s greatest gifts. The turning of the calendar doesn’t just mark time, it invites us to reflect, reset, and step forward with renewed purpose. A new year brings new opportunities to grow in faith, to strengthen friendships, to work through challenges with perseverance, and to become a little better than we were yesterday. It’s also a chance to set meaningful goals, whether that’s improving study habits, being more responsible, showing more kindness, or simply giving our personal best each day. At St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, we believe every child is created with purpose, and each day is another chance to discover and develop the gifts God has placed within them. As we enter 2026 together, my hope is that our students and families feel encouraged and supported, knowing that growth doesn’t require perfection, just effort, humility, and a willingness to try again. Thank you for the continued partnership you provide our school. Here’s to a new year filled with learning, laughter, faith, and countless new opportunities. All orders for physical cards—whether submitted via the green order sheet or through RaiseRight—must be turned in by 8:00 AM on the first Tuesday of each month. One-Week Processing Time Physical gift card orders will be sent home with your student one week after the order deadline, on the second Tuesday of each month. Ordering Outside the Monthly Schedule If you need physical gift cards outside of the scheduled monthly order week, you may place an order through the parish office at any time. Happy New Year from all of us at SPS! -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Medication Change in 2026-2027 School Year Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, there will be a change to our medication procedures. St. Paul the Apostle will no longer provide ibuprofen (Advil) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to students. This adjustment aligns with the recommendation of the Scott County Health Department. If a student comes to the office with a headache, we will recommend they drink water and return to class. If they return and symptoms persist, we will contact home. During the second semester of this school year, we will continue to provide Advil and Tylenol as needed, but we will be more selective and encourage water first. Thank you for your understanding and partnership in keeping our students safe. ********** Spruce Up the School We need all hands-on deck to make our school sparkle for Catholic Schools week!! Please sign up to help at the links below. There is a Men’s Night link for Friday night for anyone who wants to come in and help with the “High” stuff (cleaning light fixtures and fixing items that require a ladder), as well as a link for Saturday morning for deep cleaning classrooms and hallways. Any amount of time will be greatly appreciated and this will count as volunteer hours for your Home and School obligation. Students, especially Junior High are welcome to help too, but they must stay with a parent at all times! If you are joining us, please bring some of the cleaning items or tools listed below if possible: Buckets, rags, vacuums, brooms, dust pans, etc., and please put your name on them if you plan to share them so if they are left behind, we know who to contact. Helpers please sign in at the school kitchen. There will be class lists – please sign in for each student as these will go directly to the teachers for the Out of Uniform list (K-8 only). As a “Thank You” for helping, all children in your family will receive an “Out of Uniform” pass to be used on Tuesday, January 20th. (Again - Make sure that you sign in so that your child gets his/her pass!!) Thank you in advance for your time and talent! PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS As we enter the final stages of this Advent and Christmas season, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of our St. Paul the Apostle families. Your partnership, encouragement, and commitment to our school community make SPS a place that has a powerful impact on children. To our students: you bring joy to our hallways, energy to our classrooms, and a special light to our prayer and celebrations. We are proud of your hard work this year so far and grateful for the kindness and leadership you show as Panthers. As you enjoy your Christmas break, I hope that your homes are filled with peace, joy, and love. Find some time to spend as a family to truly cherish all of the gifts that God has given you. From all of us as SPS, we wish you the happiest of holidays and cannot wait to welcome you back for a great start to 2026! -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Return from Christmas Break School resumes on Monday, January 5. We will still be in the 1st Semester, so 1st semester lunches will apply. 2nd semester lunches will start on Tuesday, January 20. ************ Pertussis Going Strong Since the start of the 2025–2026 school year, more than 50 students have been identified with pertussis, compared to 55 total cases during the entire 2024–2025 school year, with cases occurring across multiple schools in Scott County. Please help us stop the spread if anyone in your home has been identified as having pertussis: If you are coughing - STAY HOME. Everyone in the household should get medication for pertussis, even if they are not coughing and even if they have been vaccinated; this helps protect others from getting it. Please see below for more information: Pertussis Letter ********** Blood Drive St. Pauls is hosting a blood drive on Tuesday, January 13th from 2:00 - 5:30.
