Principal’s Ponderings

Have you ever noticed how a small act of kindness can completely change the mood of a day? A simple smile, a “thank you,” or asking someone how they are can ripple through our school community in ways we might not even realize. At our school, we see these moments every day; when a student helps a classmate, when a teacher celebrates effort over perfection, or when families support one another in small but meaningful ways. These moments remind us that learning isn’t just about academics; it’s about building a caring, connected community.

This week, I encourage all of us, students, staff, and families, to intentionally look for opportunities to show kindness and encouragement. Notice when someone is working hard, celebrate their efforts, and take time to lift each other up. Even the smallest gesture can have a big impact, helping someone feel seen, supported, and valued. These are the moments that create a positive school environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

As we continue our journey together, let’s remember that every day is an opportunity to grow, not just in knowledge, but in virtue. By spreading kindness, practicing patience, and celebrating progress, we make our school a place where everyone feels welcome and inspired. Let’s make this week one filled with encouragement, positivity, and joy. Watch how those little acts of care create a big difference for our students and our community.

October is the Month of Mary

As we step into October, we embrace a special tradition in our Catholic faith, the Month of Mary. This month is dedicated to reflecting on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her unwavering faith, and her example of love and service. Mary’s humility and devotion remind us of the importance of kindness, prayer, and compassion in our daily lives.

Throughout October, we encourage our students and families to take a few moments each day to honor Mary, whether through prayer, reflection, or small acts of goodness toward others. In our classrooms, we will be sharing stories about Mary, discussing her virtues, and finding ways to live out her example in our school community.

May this month inspire all of us to grow in faith, hope, and love, just as Mary did. Let us continue to support one another in our journey of learning, faith, and service.

Out of Uniform Update

We have a small change to our out-of-uniform schedule this month; thank you for your understanding!

Friday, 10/10 – Assumption High School Homecoming
All students may be out-of-uniform if they wear
Red, White, Black, or AHS gear to support Assumption’s homecoming game.

Friday, 10/17 – Panther Perk Reward
Students who submitted
Panther Perk orders from 10/1–10/7 will earn an out-of-uniform day. (This is one week later than usual because of the AHS homecoming.) All perks support Home & School.

*********************************************************************************************

Out-of-Uniform Guidelines (Handbook, pg. 27):

  • Leggings or bike shorts may only be worn under dresses or skirts
  • Skirts, dresses, and shorts must be 2 inches above the knee or longer.
  • No spaghetti straps; sleeveless tops must have shoulder seams 1½–2 inches wide.
  • No bare midriffs; logos and slogans must be appropriate.
  • All other dress code rules remain in effect.

Thank you for helping our students show school spirit while following dress expectations!

*********************************************************************************************

Earring Guidelines

While we agree that earrings that hang below the earlobes can be very cute; especially seasonal designs like a cat in a pumpkin, they are not permitted under our current uniform policy. To ensure consistency with our dress code, students should wear earrings that stay close to the earlobe, as defined in our policy as “stud earrings”.

We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us maintain our school’s uniform standards.

STILL CURRENT

Attendance Matters for Student Success

Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in your child’s success, both in school and beyond. Research shows that the more a student attends school, the stronger their learning and long-term outcomes will be.

Students who miss 10% or more of school days are considered chronically absent. Families of students who reach this threshold will receive a letter from the school notifying them of this status.  Plans can be made based on this status and we are required to file truancy once a threshold is reached, and no improvement has been made.

That said, we know that absences happen. When your child is sick, they should absolutely stay home to recover. If your child is absent for a medical reason and you provide a doctor’s note, those absences will not count toward chronic absenteeism.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in supporting strong attendance at St. Paul the Apostle School. Together, we can help every student build a foundation for lifelong success!

*********************************************************************************************

AI Use on Student Devices

We want to keep you updated that AI tools have been removed from student devices here at school. While these programs can sometimes be helpful, we’ve found they are not appropriate for everyday student use during the school day.

We encourage you to help us by monitoring technology use at home as well. Many devices and apps now have built-in AI features, and students can be curious about exploring them. Please take a moment to talk with your child about responsible technology use and set limits that work best for your family.

Together, we can help guide our students toward safe, balanced, and thoughtful use of technology. Thank you for partnering with us in this important effort!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more. Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations. For the past few years each grade level classroom and specials subject have chosen a country or cultural event/item to learn more about with their students. Students work in small groups, create posters, research individuals, bring treats, sing songs and share what they have learned with one another. We will have a bi-lingual mass on October 14th to culminate this month-long celebration.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

By Ethan Connors April 8, 2026
PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS What to Do After Mass? If you were able to join us for school Mass yesterday, you may have noticed a small change in the way our students now conclude Mass. After the final recessional, students will remain in the pews, kneel, and offer a short prayer of thanksgiving before being dismissed. This is a simple addition, but one that carries great meaning. At St. Paul’s, we want our students to continue growing in their understanding that the church is a sacred space and that time spent there should be treated with reverence and care. We also want our children to see prayer not as something reserved only for certain moments, but as a natural and important part of their daily lives. Those final 30 to 60 seconds after Mass provide a beautiful opportunity for just that. In the quiet of the church, students can thank God for the blessings in their lives, ask Him to watch over their families, lift up a special intention, or pray a Hail Mary or an Our Father. While brief, these moments of silence and reflection can have a powerful impact in helping our students build habits of prayer and deepen their relationship with God. It is also important to note that when parents or family members choose to join us for school Mass, our preference is that students remain with their classroom for the entirety of the Mass. School Masses are intended to be a time for classes to worship together as a school community, and remaining with their classmates helps preserve the reverence, structure, and shared experience of the liturgy. Our hope is that these practices help our young people leave Mass not hurried or distracted, but grounded in gratitude and reminded of the presence of God in their lives. It is often in these small, intentional moments that faith begins to take deeper root. Thank you for continuing to support us in helping our students grow not only academically, but also spiritually. It is a blessing to partner with our families in forming young people who know, love, and trust God more each day. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope your time away was filled with rest, fun, and meaningful time with family and friends. As we return to school, we are excited to welcome our students back and begin the final stretch of the school year together. Spring is always a busy and exciting time at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. There is so much learning, growth, and celebration still ahead of us, and we are grateful to partner with you as we finish the year strong. Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and commitment to our school community. We are looking forward to seeing all of our students back in the building, ready to do their personal best, make wise choices, act responsibly, and keep safety first. Let’s make it a great spring at St. Paul’s! WHAT’S NEW Aftercare closed on Holy Thursday and No School on Good Friday/Holy Monday Aftercare will be closed next week on Thursday, April 2. The Iowa Catholic Conference is currently asking supporters to take a moment to complete an action alert in support of preschool access, educational flexibility, and additional support for nonpublic school facilities. The alert specifically encourages legislators to support HF 2713 / SF 2425, which includes protections for community-based preschool partnerships, a second fall ESA sign-up period for families whose situations change mid-year, and financing tools that could help nonpublic schools with future facility and infrastructure needs. I encourage our St. Paul families to take a few minutes to complete this action alert and share your support. Parent voices matter, and participation helps remind lawmakers that Catholic education is an important option for Iowa families. Thank you for continuing to advocate for our students, our school, and the future of Catholic education in Iowa. Voter Voice *********** Save the Date! St. Paul the Apostle Golf Outing Join us on June 12 for the St. Paul the Apostle Golf Outing at the beautiful Emeis Golf Course in Davenport, IA, where your swing can make a difference! PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Daylight Saving Time always feels like the universe decided to prank adults with their responsibilities. One minute you had a routine, a system, a sense of order. The next minute, the clock jumps ahead, and suddenly everyone is expected to act like losing an hour of sleep is no big deal. The kids are confused, the dogs want breakfast at the “old time,” and somehow you are both running late and exhausted at the exact same time. It is especially painful when your whole day depends on a schedule. You wake up feeling like you are lacking sleep, even when you technically did not. Breakfast feels rushed, your brain is buffering, and by mid-morning you are wondering why lunch seems so far away. Then evening comes, and even though the clock says it is time to be productive, your body is convinced it is much later and ready to shut the whole operation down. The strangest part is how everyone pretends we will “adjust in a few days,” as if that is comforting. A few days? That is a long time to be living in survival mode because someone decided the sun and I needed a new arrangement. Daylight Saving Time is basically jet lag without the vacation. As we are all going through this, let’s remember to be patient, take a breath, and know that we will get through this together! -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Spring Break Next week is Spring Break. We hope you enjoy your family time. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Spring break is March 14th - March 22nd. It can also serve as a great chance to rest, reset, and come back feeling your best. Try to keep a consistent sleep routine, going to bed and waking up around the same time each day helps your body stay energized (even if bedtime shifts a little later). Aim for simple, healthy eating habits: drink plenty of water, include fruits and veggies each day, and balance fun treats with meals that fuel you (protein, whole grains, and healthy snacks go a long way). And don’t forget reading! A few minutes a day makes a big difference. Bring a book in the car, read before bed, or set a family reading time. Even 15–20 minutes daily keeps skills sharp and helps students return ready to learn. -Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW SPS Yearbooks for sale Celebrate 100 Years of Panther Pride! 2025-26 Yearbooks are on sale this year. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS You may have noticed the new signs we placed along Rusholme Street this morning. We ordered these reminders because of the concerns we shared last week regarding drop-off and pick-up procedure violations. While some of these rules may feel minor in the moment, they exist for one reason: the safety of our students, staff, and families , and we need your help. Please take a moment to review the pick-up and drop-off expectations below, and be sure to share them with anyone who transports your child (grandparents, childcare providers, neighbors, older siblings, etc.). We all live in a fast-paced world, but drop-off and pick-up is one place we cannot afford to rush. Thank you for taking your time, staying alert, and doing your part to keep everyone safe. Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Enrollment for 2026-2027 Past Due Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now past due! We have about 15 families who have NOT completed this process, and are in jeopardy of losing their spot. You must do 2 things to complete the registration process: 1) Log into the link below using your Powerschool user name and password, then click on the “UPDATE” button next to each child’s name and go through each screen (your information should already be populated). IF YOU HAVE TO ENTER EVERYTHING MANUALLY, STOP! You are creating a duplicate record and we will have to deny it. Please make sure everything is up to date (primary contacts, emergency contacts, etc. as this information dumps into PowerSchool). It is imperative that we have contact information for all primary contacts (parents)/guardians in case of emergency. Click on this Link to re-enroll: https://portal.sccsiowa.org/ If you have forgotten your username or password, please email katee.bates@st-paul.pvt.k12.ia.us . Please do NOT create a NEW account by hitting the “get started” button. Current families must “LOGIN” (in the upper right hand corner) to update their accounts. If you have a new student that you would like to add to your current family profile, select add new student once you have reviewed your current student’s information. Make sure to submit at the end. 2) Pay the Registration fee If you have a child currently in Kindergarten - 8th grade, you may use your ESA marketplace funds to pay the $150 enrollment fee for 2026-27. Log into your Odyssey account and click on “View balance”, then on “view marketplace”. Click on the search button at the top (magnifying glass icon on the right hand side) and type in "Registration". Then click on the SCCS Registration Fee Logo and add to your cart. You should receive an email from Odyssey that says “thank you for your purchase”. This process will have to be completed for EACH child. Odyssey will then transfer the money to SCCS - no need to let the SPS or SCCS office know that you paid via Odyssey. Each child has to use their own funds. If a child doesn’t have enough money in their account, you will have to pay out of pocket. If you have already paid through Blackbaud, but would rather use ESA funds, go ahead and complete the ESA payment, and then money you already paid via Blackbaud will be applied to any balance you have due (lunch or aftercare, for example), or refunded. If you do not have marketplace funds, please login to your Blackbaud account and once you have selected a student, select “purchase optional items” at the top center of the page and select the 2026-27 enrollment fee. ********** Mass and Divine Mercy Chaplet This year, we're encouraging junior high students to attend *Friday morning 6:30 AM Mass before school AND/OR *Friday Divine Mercy chaplet at 3:00 after school (should last about 20 minutes). By Ethan Connors February 12, 2026
PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS February, the longest short month of the year. Somehow it’s the only month with fewer days and more attitude. One minute we’re cruising through the school year, and the next we’re asking, “Wait… how is it only February 11th!?” (And also, “How is it already February 11th!?”) The weather can’t decide what it wants to be, our routines are strong but our patience is being tested, and the calendar is packed even though the month is not. And yet, February still brings so many good things: students settling in, teachers pushing forward, and families doing the daily hero work of getting everyone up, fed, and out the door. As we make our way through this longest short month together, let’s remember to dress in layers, stay hydrated, and be extra kind to classmates, to staff, and to ourselves. Hang in there everyone. March is out there somewhere, probably hiding behind the next snowflake! Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Pick-Up and Drop-Off instructions We have noticed a concerning trend during both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up: some K-8 students are being dropped off or picked up on Rusholme Street. This creates a significant backup, disrupts our normal traffic flow, and has nearly led to several accidents. Please follow the appropriate parking lot drop-off/pick-up procedures, which can be found here: Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures . If someone else brings your children to school or picks them up after school, please review these procedures with them as well. Our goal is to prevent any accidents that could occur due to traffic congestion and gridlock. We have ordered additional signage for these areas, but until it arrives, we appreciate your diligence and cooperation in keeping everyone safe. ************ Early Dismissal This Friday/No School Monday Just a reminder that we have an early dismissal this Friday, Feb. 13 at 12:55 and NO SCHOOL on Monday, Feb. 16. *********** Enrollment for 2026-2027 DUE THIS FRIDAY Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now open, and must be completed by February 13 to guarantee your spot for next year . PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Holy sickness! We have seen a rise in students being sick in all schools across the Scott County. Here are some helpful tips for parents. When your child is sick, please help us keep everyone healthy by keeping them home if they have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, a persistent cough, or symptoms that are worsening or prevent them from fully participating in school. If symptoms are severe, don’t improve, or you suspect a contagious illness such as flu, strep, or pink eye, please contact your doctor. If your child is seen by a doctor, please provide the school with a note so we can document the absence and support any needed restrictions. Your child may return to school once they have been fever-free and symptom-free (vomiting/diarrhea) for 24 hours and are feeling well enough to complete a full school day. PRINCIPAL’S PONDERINGS Good morning, SPS! This week is Catholic Schools Week, and we’re going to celebrate the gift of Catholic education with a lot of fun, dodgeball, volleyball, spelling bees, and more. Most importantly, we’ll celebrate the people who make SPS great: our students, staff, families, and parish community. Let’s make it a great week: Personal Best, Wise Choices, Act Responsibly, and Safety First! Mr. Connors WHAT’S NEW Enrollment for 2026-2027 Re-enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year will open today at 3:00PM, and must be completed by February 13 to guarantee your spot for next year . When you start, please make sure you are registering for the 2026-2027 school year. If that option is not available, please check back later or you will have to redo the entire application. Y & O CSW 2026 *********** Science Fair Judges Needed Hello St. Paul Families, I am in search of volunteers with a strong science background or who are involved in a science or engineering career familiar with the steps and process of the scientific method. Tuesday, February 3rd from 8:00 to 10:30 is the 7th grade science fair. Students have worked for two and half months researching, setting up, and experimenting on a topic of their choice. I am seeking adult volunteers that would be willing to judge several seventh graders' overall experiment, presentation, report, and display. This would all be judged using a provided rubric. One request I have is that if you are the parent, grandparent, or directly connected to any seventh graders you are kindly asked not to volunteer to keep judging as fair as possible. If you or someone you know is interested, please reach out to Mrs. Kari Nydle at kari.nydle@st-paul.pvt.k12.ia.us. Thank you so much for considering! ************ Catholic Schools Week Service Project St. Ambrose University Global Brigade Collection During Catholic Schools Week, the students in grades 4-8 will be collecting school supplies for students in rural Panama who have little to no school supplies. A flyer is attached. Supplies needed: notebooks, small backpacks, pencils, erasers, folders, stickers, construction paper, party favors. There is also a CR Code on the flyer so you can order items from Amazon to be sent to St. Ambrose University directly. Thank you for your support of this SPS service project!
